🛒 Important Stroller Information for Parents
If you're visiting with a stroller, this is something you should know before you go.
During our visit, we had to leave our stroller outside certain attractions.
The aquarium's current rules state that strollers are not permitted inside indoor exhibits or the Aquatheater and must be parked in designated areas.
That matched our experience.
We had to park our stroller outside areas including the shark exhibit, the sea lion show and the spineless exhibit.
My advice:
If you have a young child who still needs a stroller, bring it if you need it—but be prepared to park it outside certain exhibits.
And take your belongings with you.
The aquarium specifically says that belongings left with parked strollers are at the visitor's own risk.
For our family, the stroller was still useful because Matthew and Luke are young and there was quite a bit of walking.
🚗 Getting to the New York Aquarium
We left our house at around 2:20 PM.
Our plan was to spend the afternoon at the New York Aquarium and then enjoy some time around Coney Island afterward.
We arrived in the area at approximately 3:20 PM, but getting a parking space was not as easy as we hoped.
The parking area was already full or occupied.
We waited for a few minutes, hoping that somebody would leave.
Luckily, someone who appeared to be coming back from the boardwalk was leaving their parking spot and offered it to us.
That worked out perfectly for our family.
Parking can be an important part of your planning
One thing I noticed during our visit was that the parking area wasn't being used only by aquarium visitors. I saw people coming back from the beach and boardwalk as well.
So if you're driving to the New York Aquarium, don't assume that every car in the parking area belongs to an aquarium visitor.
The aquarium itself also warns that parking is limited and subject to availability. Its current posted non-member rates are $18 for up to three hours, $25 for three to four hours, and $40 for more than four hours.
We paid $25 for parking during our visit.
For us, finding a spot was more difficult than actually paying for it.
🍦 Food & Bathrooms With Young Kids
After the sea lion show, we headed toward the Seaside Café.
We didn't realize that it had already closed after 5 PM.
That caught us by surprise.
Luckily, there was still a food trailer/truck open.
So we got:
- Nachos and cheese ($6.49 plus tax)
- Ice cream ($5.99)
And Matthew was extremely happy.
He had already been asking for ice cream after we finished the shark exhibit, but we had to move on because we had the sea lion show to get to.
Once he finally got his ice cream, he was very happy.

Another thing parents don't always think about until they need it is the bathroom—especially when you have a toddler in diapers.
During our visit, I noticed there were restrooms distributed across the different aquarium buildings. Specifically, dedicated family restrooms (such as the one located inside the Ocean Wonders: Sharks exhibit in the final gallery) are equipped with accessible features and baby changing stations. There is also a quiet Lactation Station located indoors near the Spineless and Playquarium areas if you need a private space for feeding or changing.
I took Matthew to the restroom in the shark building before we left that area.
For families with young children, knowing these facilities are built into the major indoor exhibit halls is reassuring—meaning you don't necessarily have to hustle all the way outside the gates just to handle a quick diaper change.
🎟️ Why We Used a Membership Instead of Buying Individual Tickets
Our family already had a membership.
My wife had a pass that covered three of us, while Luke was still free because of his age. Since the membership was going to expire on September 15, she decided to renew it before it expired.
While we were on our way to the aquarium, she also added the New York Aquarium to the membership.
The regular price for three of us was $325, but she found a discount and brought the total down to $265 for the year.
That made sense for our family because we can use the membership throughout the year instead of paying separately every time we visit.
WCS currently offers memberships that can include admission to the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and/or New York Aquarium, depending on the membership level.

👨👩👦 Finally, We Were Inside
After getting the stroller ready and packing our things, we headed toward the entrance.
It was around 3:30 PM when we got into the aquarium.
And the kids were in completely different moods.
Luke had slept for about an hour during the trip, and that nap seemed to recharge him completely.
As soon as he started seeing the aquarium exhibits, he became extremely energetic, repeatedly saying: “Bubbles!”
Matthew was a completely different story—he was still sleepy and preferred to stay in the stroller.
That's life with young kids: one child is ready to explore everything, while the other is perfectly happy staying put.
🦭 Meeting the California Sea Lions & Penguins
After exploring the indoor exhibits, we went outside and saw the California sea lions. Interestingly, both kids were in the stroller at that point, and the sea lions didn't capture their attention the way I expected. We didn't force it and moved on!
Next, we headed toward the penguin area where a presentation was happening. Luke was getting more energetic and wanted out of the stroller to watch.

The shark exhibit was where the kids really came alive. Looking up to see fish swimming overhead in the underwater viewing tube brought great reactions.
Matthew's absolute favorite part wasn't even the sharks—he crawled through the tube-like tunnel three times! Adults look at the sharks, but toddlers look at buttons and tunnels.
🦭 The 5 PM Sea Lion Show
We came out of the shark building just before the 5 PM sea lion show at the Aquatheater. The 15-minute show was fantastic, and whenever the crowd clapped, Matthew eagerly started clapping too.

At around 5:40 PM, we Arrived at the Spineless Exhibit and Playquarium area just before closing time at 6:00 PM. While Matthew and Luke wandered around without showing much interest in the actual sea creatures, the parents were completely captivated by the glowing invertebrates and their vibrant colors, as well as the beautiful photo spot featuring a colorful sea-nature background.

🌴 Continuing Into a Coney Island Evening
Since we were already in Coney Island, what surprised us was how close the Brighton Beach boardwalk is to the New York Aquarium—we honestly had no idea it was right there. Luna Park near the aquarium was still buzzing with activity because it was Saturday, and the beach was completely full, with people showing no signs of leaving even past 6:00 PM. In the distance, we could even catch a glimpse of a cruise ship navigating away from the coast
We decided to walk along the boardwalk toward the lively crowd to soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The kids were thrilled when we grabbed a second round of ice cream to keep their energy up while taking in the sights and sounds of the evening.
